Andy Riley, Emmy and BAFTA Award winning writer and cartoonist, is offering a year’s free mentoring for UK-based comedy writers who are POC (people of colour).

The scheme has been running since 2016, and the idea is to give a platform to upcoming, fresh talent. Andy has also had several other writers onboard to offer mentoring, and in case you want to check them out, they are Sarah MorganTim Reid and (operating as The Dawson Brothers) Andrew Dawson, Tim Inman and Steve Dawson.

The mentoring takes place mostly by email, and is for POC comedy writers who are either at the start of their careers or looking to get started. Mentees will receive notes on their comedy scripts and advice from their mentor/mentors over a twelve month period. Plus, this year, production company Objective Media will be offering every mentee the option to write a treatment for a new comedy show for Objective, which Objective will pay them £750 for.

This year, there are up to four places on offer.

To apply, you’ll need to email the following to luckyheathercomic@gmail.com, with the subject ‘Mentoring 2022’:

  • A paragraph or two introducing yourself
  • A script sample of your comedy writing work, in PDF, Word, or Final Draft, with your name and email included
  • (Optional) Links to videos you’ve done, on YouTube or Instagram or anywhere else you’ve put them

Applications close at 11pm on 15th June 2022.
