New Writing North offer a whole host of huge development opportunities for writers based in the North of England. Current opportunities include three awards in partnership with Channel 4.

Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, New Writing North is a leading charitable organisation in the development of creative writing and reading in the North of England. They’ve been operating since 1996, and offer development opportunities through programmes and activities in partnership with major national broadcasters. These partners include the BBC, Channel 4 and Sky, as well as publishing companies, local authorities and educational bodies.

Currently, New Writing North have three development opportunities in writing for television. Offered in partnership with Channel 4, these offer a selected individual the chance to work closely with one of the following production companies, with each offered as a separate award:

  • Lime Pictures (placement on Hollyoaks offered, plus mentoring support and a bursary worth £3000)
  • Rollem Productions (long-term placement with Rollem Productions offered, plus mentoring support, a bursary worth £3000 & access to the C4/NWN Northern Talent Network)
  • Bonafide Films (opportunity to work closely with Bonafide Films offered, plus mentoring support and a bursary worth £3000)

Applications are completed online, and are judged by New Writing North and Channel 4 alongside the relevant production company. You’ll need to submit the following:

  • Outline of an original TV storyline (up to 400 words)
  • Sample script (no more than 10 pages)
  • Answers to the application questions

You’ll also need to be living in the North of England (plus intending to remain there for at least the following 12 months), above the age of 18, and writing for television.
