The Popcorn Writing Award
The Popcorn Writing Award is offered by Popcorn Writing Group in partnership with BBC Writersroom. It’s been running since 2019, and has a prize fund of £6000 for the winner and finalists!
The Popcorn Writing Award exists to champion new work at the Edinburgh Fringe. So, to be eligible to apply, your play will need to meet the following criteria:
- New piece of writing
- No significant run prior to the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe
- Being shown at a partner venue (Assembly, Gilded Balloon, Pleasance, The Space, Summerhall, Traverse or Underbelly)
In particular, the award is a celebration of ‘brave and imaginative work which playfully and artistically questions and addresses current affairs and societal trends and contributes positively to public debate’ (Popcorn Writing Award).
Longlisted writers will be offered the chance to meet up with members of Popcorn Group and BBC Writersroom, as well as the Drama Commissioning Team. Plus, you may be invited to participate in a writer development programme.
To apply, you will need to email the venue at which your play is being performed. Use the subject heading ‘Popcorn Writing Award 2023 // Title of Play // Writer’s Name // Venue Associated’. Attach your piece of writing and a 50-word summary, and you’re done!
